Open House
October 19, 2008
Belltown Volunteers welcomed members of the community to our annual Open House for Fire Prevention. An automobile extrication demonstration that showcased Rescue 44, and a search and rescue demonstration that featured a dramatic second floor window rescue using Tower Ladder 45. All three demonstrations also featured home responders meeting the apparatus at the scene in order to portray the public service message of "See a Blue Light, Move to the Right."
Another high point of the event which showed the spirit of brotherhood and cooperation that is held between volunteer firefighters throughout our state, was the Kid’s Fire Safety Trailer and Sparky the Fire Dog both on loan from the East Hampton, CT Volunteer Fire Department, which was run by their Deputy Fire Marshal Rich Klotzbier, who volunteered his time to come to Stamford and be a part of our event.

Busy Day in Belltown
July 19, 2008
Belltown Volunteer Firefighters had a busy 24 hours. What started with a late night standby for a multiple alarm fire in Stamfords fire district brought 14 members to the station. During this standby Engine 41 responded first due to a downtown nursing home for an odor of smoke investigation. The morning became allot more routine with an early morning residential fire alarm that was investigated by Engine 41 & Rescue 44 and was determined to be unintentional.
The afternoon brought a heavier than normal call volume starting with a Mutual Aid response to a Commercial Fire Alarm in Springdales fire district. This was not a call that Belltown normally responds on and while Engine 41 was on scene, Tower Ladder 45 was sent mutual aid into Stamfords fire district to assist Rescue 1 with a stuck occupied elevator in a downtown office building. As Engine 41 was clearing from the Springdale box alarm, they heard second and third due units being sent into Springdale for a Brush Fire with possible structural exposures, realizing they were closer Car 411 (Acting Chief Alessi) asked fire dispatch if they were needed and was assigned to the incident.
The evening brought a lengthy medical incident at a local school. Members had been providing a fire watch standby all day at the school for a large religious event. The weather was very hot both inside and outside the building. In the after noon we had a medical call for a woman feeling sick. Engine 41 responded with Stamford EMS to assist Utility 40 that was already on scene. This minor incident was a sign of things to come. Two hours later Rescue 44, Engine 41, Car 411 (Acting Chief Alessi) & Car 412 (Acting Assistant Chief N. Didelot) responded for multiple patients with similar symptoms. This incident also included Medic 3, Medic 4, and Medic Supervisor 901 from Stamford EMS and an ambulance from Access Ambulance Service to the scene, as well as Deputy Fire Marshal 109 from Stamford Fire Rescue Department, a Zone Sergeant from the Stamford Police Department and an Inspector for the Stamford Health Department. Working with Medic 4 from Stamford EMS, Engine 5 from Stamford Fire Rescue Department and Rescue 66 from Turn of River, treatment continued. By the time the patient was transported she was breathing and had a pulse. This incident showed how rapid response, team work and solid training lead to a positive outcome for the patient.

Entertainment included a DJ, and live music from the bands Summer Lost & Free Ride. Our members worked hard the week before the Block party getting everything ready and started our day at 9:00 am the day of the Block Party. Belltown also had an important visit from Stamford's own Congressman Christopher Shays, who donned a Belltown Block Party T-Shirt and joind our members and their families in the food booth making Pizza Fritta. July 12, 2008

John DeMaio was a true example of our motto “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” and will be sorely missed by all.

Belltown Becomes All-Volunteer
January 2, 2008
The new year brought big changes to Belltown as the department transitioned from a combination of paid and volunteer firefighters, to all volunteer. Belltown members were quickly put to work with two simultaneous calls. While enroute to a fire alarm activation in the Turn of River Fire District Belltown was toned for a possible structure fire on Toms Road. With Engine 41 currently out of service for repairs Truck 45 responded first due and was met by Car 411 and home responding firefighters. Engine 42 was released quickly from the Turn of River call and responded as well. All units were cleared when it was determined that the smoke in the residence was caused by an oil burner backfire. Later in the day Belltown members responded on board Truck 45 to a fire alarm activation in the Glenbrook Fire District which was caused by overcooked food.

Belltown responds to two fires in one day
December 4, 2007
At approximately 10:30 am Turn of River Fire Department was dispatched to a reported working house fire. Fire dispatch quickly relayed to Engine 62 that they were receiving multiple calls. Fire Marshal 610 arrived on scene and confirmed a working fire, requesting Tower Ladder 45 from Belltown. Chief 411 responded along with Tower Ladder 45 to a fire that was complicated by high winds and a long distance to the nearest Hydrant, requiring tankers from Long Ridge and Turn of River. Tower Ladder 45’s crew began to vent the roof before it became untenable. After the fire was extinguished Support Unit 40 responded with manpower to assist in equipment retrieval and clean up.
While Units were operating out of district on this fire, other members responded to the Belltown firehouse and staffed Engine 42 and Rescue 44. During this time Engine 42 responded first due along with Engine 52 from Springdale into Turn of River for a reported Natural Gas Leak in an occupied strip mall. After returning from that call Engine 42 was again called into Turn of River for a Medical call at an office building.
At approximately 5:30 pm that night as members were preparing for the weeks regular drill they were alerted to a possible house fire in the Belltown District. Engine 42, Tower Ladder 45, Rescue 44 and Chief 411 responded. First arriving units found the house charged with smoke from a fire in a wood pile next to the wood burning stove inside of a single family residence. A resident on scene had prevented further fire spread by pouring water on the wood pile. Firefighters removed the remaining burning material, checked for fire extension and ventilated the house with fans. Once the fire was fully out, members returned to the firehouse for regularly scheduled training.
Busy Day in Belltown

Belltown units were called to 3 districts in an hour. What started out as a very slow day for Belltown quickly changed, as members who were finishing luch were dispatched with Tower Ladder 45 to an activated alarm in Turn of River. This call was downgraded before Tower Ladder 45 left the firehouse. However, members were still on the apparatus floor when Engine 41 was dispatched with Stamford E.M.S. to a child with a broken arm at a local school. The members were only back in quarters a short time after that call when they were dispatched as part of a mutual aid box to a downtown office building for smoke comming from an elevator penthouse, which Engine 41 arrived at first on the scene.

Belltown responded to 22 calls in 24 hours, only 2 of which were not directly related to the storm. The city’s 9-1-1 center implemented a Level 2 Emergency Response early in the morning, which brought members to the firehouse in preparation for multiple calls. Engine 41, Engine 42, Rescue 44 and Car 411 were kept busy with multiple flooded residences and working with the utility companies to assess potential hazards to residents. While the storm’s aftermath increased call volume greatly, our normal calls for service still had to be handled as Belltown units also responded to an odor investigation, a carbon monoxide alarm, a medical emergency and fire alarms in the Belltown, Glenbrook & Springdale districts

Five Calls Before 1:00 PM
January 29, 2007
Members of Belltown had a busy morning handling 5 calls between 10:32 and 12:41. The day started off uneventful, but soon brought a request for Mutual Aid from Glenbrook Fire Dept. for a major water leak inside a residence on Lenox Av. Engine 41 & Car 411 responded to assist with pumping the nearly 5 feet of water from the basement of the vacant home. While on scene Engine 41 diverted to respond to a medical call around the corner on Midland Av, also in Glenbrook. While on the scene of the Medical, Engine 41 crew investigated an odor of natural gas inside the same residence. Engine 41 was getting fuel, after leaving both scenes, when Belltown was dispatched to a water main break under the street on Crestwood Pl. Engine 41 & Engine 42 responded and found water pushing up through cracks on all sides of an intersection. Engine 42 redirected from this call to respond to a reported truck fire on Union St in Glenbrook. Car 411 arrived on scene and confirmed a fire in the rear of a paper shredding truck. Engine 42 worked with the crews of Engine 32 & Engine 1 to extinguish and overhaul this fire. While taking up from this scene, Engine 42’s crew observed heavy smoke coming from in front of a house under construction on Douglas Av. Engine 42 could not readily investigate due to a high fence and a locked gate. Car 411 responded and called Engine 42 & Engine 1 to respond also. Car 411 arrived and determined the smoke to be exhaust from an equipment motor that had been started next to the dumpster.

Although he had moved to Florida after retiring, Chief Buttery was a frequent visitor back to Stamford, and his brother firefighters here at Belltown. Chief Buttery did his best not to miss our annual Christmas Party and would always attend any department function when he was in town. In between his visits home, he kept in contact with the department through letters, and always enjoyed receiving updates on the department and our membership.

Tropical Storm Ernesto
September 2, 2006
Tropical Storm Ernesto cause major damage to the Connecticut shore, including the disruption of power to 11,000 Stamford residents. Belltown members responded to numerous calls throughout the night and the next day brought on by the storm. The first ever use of the newly adopted Level 3 Emergency Staffing procedure brought members to the station due to the storm. More than half of the calls that Belltown responded to were storm related, including Power lines down across roads and private yards, Trees that fell on houses, and flooding conditions made worse by the lack of power for residents sump pumps. At one house that had been struck by a falling tree, Firefighters entered the structure to rescue two dogs that were inside the house. During the storm, the regular call volume did not stop just because severe weather was overhead, Belltown still responded in and out of our fire district to Fire Alarms, Emergency Medical Calls, a residential gas leak, and a Fire in the basement of a house that was still flooded. Belltown Fire department supplied generator power to residential pumps and deployed our own pumps in an effort to alleviate the large scale flooding brought on by a combination of the heavy rains and the power outage. Members checked several trees that had fallen for entanglement with power lines and evaluated structural damage to houses that had been struck by falling trees. Members also blocked streets both with barricades and with fire apparatus in an effort to control traffic and detour the public around hazardous areas.

Emergency Staffing Level 2
August 2, 2006
The day after Belltown approved participation in a citywide Emergency Staffing procedure, that procedure was put into effect. Due to the high demand for electric power in the downtown Stamford area due to a heat wave, CL&P implemented a planned shutdown. This quickly brought our Alert Status to Level 1 and then to Level 2. Belltown Volunteers responded to and staffed 2 Engines and 1 Rescue within minutes. The early part of this Power Emergency brought us 4 calls, none of which were power related, 3 of them came in at nearly the same time. Belltown units responded to all 3 without the need for extra mutual aid. Belltowns use of our text messaging system gained responses from members who were out of our radio coverage area.

Bi-Annual Block Party
July 8, 2006

The day started with members finishing up the set up which started earlier in the week, quickly moved to the community based party as the crowd began to gather at 3:00 pm. Once again the rides on our Antique 1949 Mack Fire Engine proved to be one of the most popular attractions. Families and neighbors tried their hand at many games including the Dunk Tank, Speed Pitch and the High Striker and a slide that resembled a ladder truck. Firefighters and their families cooked food including the Block Party favorites Pizza Fritta and Cheese Steak wedges. The Block Party's entertainment started with local DJ Larry Nardi, who played music all afternoon. Sharky & the Unknowns opened our evening show followed by local favorite Free Ride. Yale & Town Fire
April 3, 2006
Tower Ladder 45 responded on the third alarm to what ended up as a six-alarm fire that destroyed several businesses at Building 15 of the old Yale & Towne property at 735 Canal St. Yale & Towne was the manufacturer that gave Stamford it's original nick name "The Lock City." The fire broke out shortly after noon inside a Stamford warehouse building that housed numerous small businesses including antique stores and a motorcycle dealer. The fire advanced from that area, near Pacific Street, toward the front of the building. Strong shifting winds, a very old building and a lack of water pressure in this part of town is what made this fire so problematic. There was a sprinkler system inside it was no match for old floors and oil impregnated in those floors. Firefighters had to draft water from the canal to extinguish the flames, an operation not used in twenty-seven years in downtown Stamford.
Stamford Police evacuated about 200 residents who live near the site at Pacific and Henry streets. Tower Ladder 45 was initially relocated to Stamford Fire HQ, but was called to the scene before they arrived at the station. Tower Ladder 45 was the only elevated platform on the scene, with Stamford's three Aerial Ladders until Stamford's Tower 1 was returned to active service late in the night. Belltown firefighters stayed along side Stamford Fire Rescue Department overnight to put out spot fires in the roof. Tower Ladder 45 operated for over 16 hours finally leaving the scene at 7:00am. While Tower Ladder 45 was at the scene, volunteers quickly manned the station and responded to a medical call in the Stamford Fire District. Members remained at the station to cover the Stamford Fire District, as well as assist in the Glenbrook, Springdale & Turn of River Fire Districts due to apparatus from those stations relocating units to Downtown Stamford fire stations.
